Radical East USA Announces HSR Radical Challenge Cup Series

Spec series promotes competitive cost-effective racing for the gentleman driver.

Nov. 10, 2010  Jupiter Fla. - In conjunction with Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR), Radical East USA announced today they will launch a new racing Series aimed toward creating competitive cost-effective open cockpit prototype racing for the gentleman driver.

Featuring the highly successful open cockpit Radical SR3 RS Le Mans-style prototype racer,  the series is slated to appear at HSR events throughout North America. The tentative 5 race schedule will feature such historic venues as Sebring International Raceway, the road course at Daytona Speedway and the scenic natural terrain circuit of Road Atlanta, home to such legendary events as the 10 hour Petit Le Mans and 'The Mitty.'

"We think this is an exciting time for open cockpit prototype road racing," noted Barry Smith of Radical East USA. "We feel we've found the right formula and have the right car to give the gentleman driver an exciting, competitive Series while insuring costs are kept inline and the playing field is kept level. To my mind, no other race car or form of racing can deliver the gentleman driver with this much bang for his buck."

The Radical SR3 RS is built to be a forgiving, fun to drive sports racer. The driver sits surrounded by a carbon steel space frame chassis forming an integral FIA approved safety cell complete with an aluminum honeycomb front crash structure.  It's power comes from a 1340cc double overhead cam 4 cylinder Powertec Suzuki K8 “Busa” engine delivering eye-opening performance (0-60 3.6 sec.). With an extended refresh schedule and sealed ECU, the engine delivers a whopping 210bhp / 130 ft lbs through a 6 speed manual sequential transmission with a Quaiffe limited slip gear drive. It’s reliable.

And the Radical SR3 RS sticks. The 1320 lb. prototype  gets its uncanny grip from the high down force (cornering G’s 2.5) Aero Pak working with Bespoke Dunlop slick tires. And when you have to stop, the Radical SR3 RS’ four pot Radical calipers with vented discs do it with authority.

"The Radical SR3 RS is the perfect car for this format," continued Barry. "At 0-60 mph in around 3 1/3 seconds, it's wicked quick. It develops incredible down force sticking like glue through the corners. It requires very little maintenance and it's extremely reliable. And more importantly, it's safe!"

With the car and the venues intact, the focus of the Series turns to insuring a level playing field and managing costs.

"It's extremely important the costs stay in line and rules remain easy to manage," added Smith. "With that in mind, we've developed a rules package that directly avoids runaway costs. Drivers will not be allowed to make any performance enhancements or modifications to the car. Beyond safety upgrades, all cars must be presented to the HSR tech officials in their original factory configuration. That will insure a level playing field and will eliminate owners have to make expensive modifications and performance upgrades."

To kickoff the Series, Radical is offering a $12,000 factory rebate to the first 12 buyers joining the HSR Radical Challenge Cup Series. This will directly reduce the cost of the Radical SR3 RS to $93,796.00 compared to the regular price  of $105,796.00 – which includes air freight and import duty.

"We know we've got an amazing package here," said Smith. "When we talk to drivers throughout the country the number one concern they have is cost containment. Sure they want to have fun. But they also want assurance that they can show up and be competitive without having to invest in upgrades every time they race. The HSR Radical Challenge Cup Series will provide that. And the Radical SR3 RS is the perfect car to insure safe, close competition and a whole lot of fun. We're excited."

The first race of the HSR Radical Challenge Cup Series is tentatively scheduled for Feb 10-13 at Palm Beach International Raceway.
